ABOUT THE ARTIST

Emily Maddox

Emily Maddox is an oil painter from Louisville, Kentucky.

Raised by creative parents and inspired by time spent with her grandmothers—painting watercolors, watching birds, making jewelry, and exploring fashion—she grew up surrounded by creativity and encouragement.

In school, she found herself naturally drawn to creative spaces, from early art classrooms to lively elementary libraries and music classes. In 2014, she first began oil painting, guided by teachers who encouraged her to “see color, put it in.” She later studied marketing and design at the University of Kentucky, where she continued to explore photography, videography, painting, and other visual arts.

Over the past five years, Emily has lived across Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming, spending time in mountain towns while building a career across photography, real estate, tourism, and marketing. Through each of these experiences, she continued to gravitate toward creative work and environments. Visits to local galleries and time spent outdoors gradually drew her back to fine art.

With each move, she began to notice how different places shaped her perspective, influencing the subjects she was drawn to—from mountains and deserts to rivers, florals, and the natural world around her. Inspired by her surroundings, her family, and her appreciation for nature, Emily eventually returned to oil painting, finding the process both grounding and intuitive.

Her work continues to evolve, balancing a desire for looseness with an instinct for detail. Through her paintings, she hopes to create pieces that bring a sense of warmth and familiarity to the spaces they inhabit.

She currently lives and paints in Colorado, where she is developing original collections and creating commissioned works.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Painting is my way of preserving the places and subjects that make somewhere feel like home.

I am drawn to the familiar—a flower that reminds me of someone, or a landscape tied to a particular place or time. Painting allows me to slow down and spend more time with these subjects, noticing the colors, shapes, light, and small details that might otherwise be overlooked.

The landscapes I have lived in and moved through have shaped what I notice and what I am drawn to paint. I am interested in the way our surroundings become connected to memory, and how something as simple as a flower, mountain, river, or familiar animal can come to represent so much more.

My process begins with observation but leaves room for interpretation. I am continually exploring the balance between detail and looseness—deciding what needs to be carefully described and what can be left to color, shape, and brushwork.

Ultimately, I hope to create paintings that feel both personal and lasting—pieces that become part of a home, gather memories of their own, and are lived with for years to come.
